Punjab produces approximately 19-20 million ton of paddy straw and about 20 million ton of wheat straw. About 85-90 per cent of this paddy straw is burnt in the field, and increasingly, wheat straw is also being burnt during the Rabi harvesting season. In Haryana, the problem of paddy straw burning also exists, although the scale is smaller than in Punjab.

Therefore, a practical, cost effective solution for the disposal /use of agricultural and agro-industrial waste is making biomass fuel / briquettes for power generation.

In CSIR – CMERI, a multi feedstock  automatic briquetting machine has been designed and developed which can produce briquettes  offsite from agri wastes like wheat / paddy straw, dry leaves, rice husk, grass, saw dust every etc.

In general, the feedstock (straw, dry leaves, grass, bagasse etc.) are chopped into size of <2 mm to 1.5 cm in a shredder. Binder is prepared by mixing starch, animal fat, molasses or paper pulp with water. Thereafter, both feedstock and binder come to a pan mixer where it is thoroughly mixed and goes to main briquetting machine hopper through a vertical screw conveyer. The ratio of feedstock and binder and initial moisture content of the briquettes depend on type of feedstock and binder. For making briquettes from dry leaves use 20 % binder and initial moisture content of 20 % has been optimized. From the hopper, the raw material flows down to feeding box through gravity and through a pre programmed process (through PLC) briquettes are produced continuously and come out through a roller conveyor.  Thereafter, the briquettes can be sun dried or can be dried in conventional / solar dryer up to a moisture content of 4 to 8 % for final use in household and dhabas for cooking purpose as well as in boiler & furnaces for generation of heat.

Complete briquetting system comprises of biomass shredding unit, binder soaking-cum-pulverizing unit, biomass-binder mixer, conveyor, hydraulically operated briquetting machine, and a roller conveyor for final delivery of briquettes and control panel. Advantages of the technology are: a) Use of multi-feed stock, b) briquette sizing as per requirement, c) use of locally available waste material as binder, d) 5000 briquettes per day (8h), e) briquette density as per requirement, f) optimized shape of briquette for better burning providing passage for free oxygen flow  (honey comb structure), g) same machine can be used for production of briquettes for domestic as well as industrial purpose h) combination of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems.
